asking questions

I try to ask questions so the students see what the subject is about and to find out what I need to go over again

I use this tactic as well. More often than not I wind up going back into a region of the lesson that needed clarification for many of the students who didn't ask a question.

Hi Tanya, That regular feedback is very valuable for you and your students.

I ask students to write down all questions they have while reading a chapter at home. In class we go over all the questions. It helps very much. Also we have on-line discussion board and quiz almost every week- so it is easy to evaluate who understands the material and who does not.

Hi Shirley, Thanks for sharing some examples of active learning combined with effective questioning techniques. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I use a similiar technique. I gather the questions asked, open the floor for discussion and lecture the answer with the assitance of the class. Then I rephrase and redirect the questions and seek answers from the class. I will later use the questions on a quiz or test to build confidence for taking a test. Also during the open discussion and lecture, I constantly praise participation for answering the questions. This technique really get the crowd electrified about the course material.

Hi Amy, That is really good advice to make sure that students take an active role in their leaning!

Asking questions is key to instructor assessment... However, taking a quick survey of what they have learned is a great way to get the ball rolling..

I find this is a good exercise as well. When a student comes to me for tutoring, or has missed a class, I ask them to formulate specific questions about topics that they want to review. I feel like this teaches them to specifically state the content areas in which they are weak, and they too learn to formulate a question that will get them a targeted response.

wHAT i DO IS i ASK THE STUDENTS TO READ THE CHAPTERS AHEAD OF TIME AND I ask each student to put together a 3 to 5 questions for the next day for class discussion.
