Positive reinforcement

If a weaker student doesn't get any positive feedback on an answer they've given, they're far less likely to speak up in the future. Sometimes, if a student has given an incorrect answer to a question, you can get others in the class involved by asking another student to help the first one. This keeps the students involved and gives positive reinforcement to both students. Confidence is key for effective teaching and learning.

Peer involvement can, at times, be more effective than just the teacher asking a question. Students can ask each other questions; this boosts confidence for both and helps their social skills too.

Hi Megan, That is a good strategy for the shy student, as it is much less threatening and can get them engaged. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I agree that it is important to provide positive reinforcement to students who do not often speak. I find that this strongly encourages them to participate in future discussions. Allowing other students to participate in discussion when dialoguing with a weaker student is a good way to provide help to the weaker student without having the spotlight directly on them, which will make the weaker student more nervous, from my experience.

I find it useful to use positive reinforcement also when evaluating a students project.

I'll focus on this as well. Sometimes you can see the frustration and some simple positive feedback can change the outlook of the rest of the class or the rest of that students day

Positive reinforcement is the best way to build confidence. Even a wrong answer can be given praise because the student has made an attempt .

I believe in positive reinforcement, to a point. I believe students need to be allowed to organize their thoughts, develop critical thinking skills. I work as a nurse, and one of the things severly lacking in new nurses is critical thinking skills. Not all students are comfortable formulating questions, but we can guide them through example and practice to increase their confidence and comfort. Their is a time for praise, but it should not be sappy and must be earned.

I completely agree. I often try to focus on the weaker students, so they feel more comfortable speaking up.

I feel like Positive reinforcement plays a huge role in teaching. I know I get better results from my students by using it.

Hi - Thanks for your post to the forum. using questioning in that manner develops a very supportive environment in the classroom. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
