Test's

I do a really good review, and still cant understand why a student has the NEED to cheat

In my opinion, testing for some people is just another competition. It is a way of keeping score or rating the issues. In any contest, no one wants to fall short of the norm, let alone fail. So, for whatever the issues leading up to the test that has kept an individual from feeling confident about the event, an equalizer may be instituted. Although in the end, one might get all those who have ever cheated to recognize & admit they knew “THEY WERE ONLY HURTING THEMSELVES” at that exact moment in time, the issue was how am I going to be perceived by those who I am competing against. A winner or something less. The big picture was never a consideration. We have become a society of the here and now. Until that changes, expect the equalizers to exist

Students are going to cheat regardless! I've just caught another student plagiarizing on a document, and after a thorough discussion with the student, it basically came down to him admitting he was just lazy, plays online games all night, and didn't have the time to write the document properly.
I honestly think it may come down to how the student was raised and if there was any responsibility ever set upon the person.

I don't think reviewing for a test ever amounts to much more than an instructor telling the students what to study, specifically, or what will be on the test. In my book, it's a form of cheating- with the intructor as a ringleader.
Students caught cheating should receive a zero grade for the first offense and be expelled if it happens again.

First of all I really do not belive in reveiws, if the student cares he well take notes during class. Cheaters in my classroom get one chance if they are caught cheating its a zero for the test and they know this from the start, my test are open book they my use a service manual or there notes so cheating is not acepted at all.

I noticed that alot of them know the answers, they just freeze up when given a written test

I give a speech at the beginning of the phase, and in my case with 101 being the first course here, I state to the students that they are going to be under my watchful eye, and any cheating will result in a test failure. I think it helps to have students that are "grownup" enough to realize that to cheat, and obtain a false higher score, is only hurting them in the end, as they will be unable to perform in the "real world", and I think this hits home, at least with most of them.... I stopped blaming myself for the students that just don't seem to be able to get it, as I think that a class size of 20+ students almost guarantees there will be some academic failures....

How big are your classes and how do they cheat? My classes are small, no more than 6 students. nearly impossible for a student to cheat with the instructors eyes constantly on them all. We also administer performance test which are strictly one on one with the instructor sitting next to them telling them the required steps right then and there. Also, we constantly change our written test from class to class so former students can't sell them test results. I tell all my students that their test review effectively begins on the first day of class. Be involved now and you won't feel you need to cheat. I also express how passing a test doesn't necessarily make them skilled at the craft, the will have to be able to deliver on the spot out there in the real world.

some students might have a poor system of values, or have not put in the time and effort to know the materials or just dont care .

they are only hurting themselves.

Hi Stu- At my campus the student automatically fails the test or assignment and signs a document to acknowledge understanding that if it happens again he/she will fail the class.

What do you do with the people you find cheating?
Do you follow up on this?

How well does your class participate during these reviews? Do they sit unresponsive? It maybe that they did not digest all the info as you might have thought. If that are very vocal and seem to know the information, I would closely exam the test.
