How often should assessment be done during a course which lasts only three weeks?
Essentially I do this through critiques that enable the student to get direct and immediate feedback on their ability to retain and apply the daily lesson. This is accompanied by a weekly standard weight bearing test.
Hi Matthew - I agree - it is really useful to do a short informal assessment like a Q & A. It tells the students how they are doing and gives the instructor a guide to plan the next lesson. Best wishes - Susan
I would think that during a three week course you should present a short quiz at the end of each week with the third being a final. However a short review with Q&A at the beginning or end of the day allows both you and the students to know where they stand. Along with questions throughout the day I feel is a good way to assess the students understanding of the material.
Hi Gerald- assessment is (and SHOULD be) an ever evolving process. Best wishes as you fine tune your revised course! Susan
My course has just changed from 3 weeks to 6 weeks, so I am using several different assessments each week: 1) an open book quiz; 2) graded group activity; 3) graded individual activity; and 4) graded objective test. Since this is only my second week using this plan, I am not certain that things will not change as we move along, but it seems to be working well for now.
It is really up too you and it would probably be based off of where you think the students are in the learning process to determine how often assessments should be made.
My courses last 100weeks. Therefore, I administer 3 exams. In addition there are two stop points when students are to tell me what their project will include and when their project will be handed in if it is earlier than the required date. All of these requirements earn credit toward their final grade.
Hi Robert- With a course that moves so quickly I would be sure to do some sort of daily assessment. A short quiz on the previous days work for example. Also be sure to utilize CATs to catch any prevalent confusion. A more formal assesssment to include would be a mid-term and a final.
