evaluation
Can formative evaluations be used alone to ealuate students?
HI David- Very troubling indeed! I try to make my final exams worth enough points that even if a student is passing prior to the exam, she will fail the class if she fails the exam. I also make sure that they know this far in advance of the exam. - Susan
i have found that students that get there grades before a final test and know they sre passing will not score as good as they have in the past.very troubling
Hi Robert - Having the student sign the grade sheet reinforces that it is really important. Do you also give them a copy of the signed report? Susan
I also agree whole-heartily students want to know where they stand as much as possible. I teach at an culinary academy and we give "daily" production grades on the product/work they have completed that day. I discuss how and why I came to their assessment and what they can/need to do to improve their performance/product. We also do weekly grading sheets that we discuss with the students as we disperse them. We have them sign to ensure that there is no mis-understanding in the future.
I use a technique similar to this in order to help the students remember the material from previous lessons.
Hi Robert- Welcome to ED 103! As you illustrate, the more comfortable your students are, the more you will learn about what they know and do not know. Keep up the great work! Best wishes - Susan
A question and answer technique used at the start or end of class. This seems to simply appear to be a chat session but in reality could be a chapter review. It is in this informal discussion that many questions get answered that were not asked during class and some new questions may be brought up. I find it to be quite effective and am constantly figuring out ways to make it better. Besides when you cover the chapter before the powerpoint comes on then the power point is supporting you not the other way around
At the start of each day I verbaly quiz the class as a whole and I use the roll sheet to call on each student. The questions are topics covered on the first day of class up through the previous day. i get an idea of where each student is and they get to compair each other with out realizing it.
Hi Charlie - Using CATs will give you that frequent feedback that you can give to your students. Best wishes - Susan
giving them a regular progress report will keep them informed as to where they are and motivate them to try harder as they go
Hi Heinz- welcome to ED 103! That's a good point. How many times have we heard "I got an A!"
and then "He gave me a D"! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career! Susan
Studetns want and need to know where they stand in the process of their learning. I share "updates" of their process after each quiz, test and exam. However, I also emphazise that this in NOT the final score of the class.
Students need to understand that they make their own grades, I only write them down.
The purpose of formative evaluation is to give feedback to students as they are learning which is why they need to be used frequently. Summative evaluations are used to determine how far the student has progressed overall. A good summative evaluation would assess learning from the start of the learning process to the very end. Formative assesssments usually assess just the learning that is currently happening.
