Discussion and feedback sessions. We also use briefings and written papers to assess student comprehension and understanding.

In my Medical Coding classes I am constantly assessing my students. The medical coder is translating the written word into numeric codes. This "art" has to be done not only with accuracy but speed too. The only way this is complished is by practicing coding scenarios which I assess with each student.

I like to use hands on learning case studies for my students. It presents a problem and allows the student to use the combined classroom knowledge along with their learned skills to find a solution.

Like other programs, I use skills based hands-on testing techniques. It is an excellent way to determine if my students acquired the necessary skills in class and if my teaching techniques were up to par. If I see a discrepancy in either area, I can diagnose and rectify the problem areas and make sure that my students leave my class with industry standard skills to make them successful in their chosen career field.

Hands on is very effective. A
So,I do power points .

In My Field we have Both the Written Test and we also have An Assessment where they have to preform an Assessment and Fix the problem with the patient they both have to Do a Hands on assessment and Use the knowledge and Skills Learned to be able to Treat the Person to solve the problem or Problems they are having. If you do not touch your patient you might not figure out whats wrong with them.

I think that practical application is a useful assesment tool. Also students enjoy this approach.

I teach culinary and its so importat the hands on assements. The way i use is first visual the power point, them i teach the tecnique verbally and finally i demonstrate the tecnique hands on. the results are really good when the students perform hands on.

Hands on. You can teach theory and process, but having them apply that to hands is a great way to see where they aren't connecting the dots. I also do talk throughs; where I ask the students to talk me through a topic step by step. I feel this helps them education their patients when they are the beside.

In the courses I teach (fashion design) I use practical exams as a way of assessing not only the student's ability to learn but also to ensure they are learning the proper techniques and to correct (ontime) the ones that are not learning. For example:
For midterm exams, I give students a written exam and a practical exam. Both exams are critical but on the practical exam I ask some students to sew a regular zipper while others sew an invisible zipper. This way I make sure they know the proper technique for each and that they know the difference between the two.

During class I'll assign short writing assignments before small group discussions. Students then read each others paragraph or two on the topic and discuss ways to expand or clarify on the other students' ideas. The purpose is to assist students in idea development and written communication. While students rarely critique fellow students directly, they will ask questions, especially to receive a clearer sense of an idea.

Since not everyone learns in the same way using alternative assessments is vital so that everyone has the opportunity to be assessed fairly. By asking students questions verbally, auditory learners will be able to answer better. By utilizing hands-on testing, kinesthetic learners will be able to respond by "showing" what they've learned.

In My Field we have to evaluate the students on a day to day bases. they have to work either individually or in group and repeat what was shown dirung the demostration. i like the hands on approach because it really allowes you to see and evaluate how much are the students learning.

Hi Michael, I am not sure what courses you teach but certainly application testing can often be the best choice. Susan
