Soft Skills in Multiple Curriculum Areas
I found that including language skills in math class added a positive new dimension to my lessons. For example, I asked students to write a short essay explain how to solve certain problems but without wrting out math equations. This required students to explain in writing what their thinking process is. I also do the same by asking students to verbally explain what to do to solve a problem on the board while another student performs those actions at the board. Combing writing, speaking, listening, and tactile actions has made for a more interesting math class.
Hi Bruce
Thank you for a great idea that I could use in an Online Discussion Board. I teach Foundations of Math II. The text has some great information on what we mean when we translate sentences into equations. But some students really need more hands on to grasp the application of a problem with, consecutive integers for example. In the Discussion Board setting it also gives the students who are doing well, the opportunity to mentor those that are struggling.
Thank you for this opportunity for "more interesting math" and combining various skills in one activity.

Hi Bruce - I am really impressed with how you are encouraging your math students to use critical thinking skills and to exercise their communication skills as well. Excellent work! Best wishes - Susan
