Evaluating the student at the begining and end, help to establish base knowledge and progress.The student gets a better picture of where they are and what is to be learned

I agree. Can you provide an example of how you do this?
I do this by having the students fill out a form asking them what prior knowledge they have in the eight disciplines that make up the Humanities course. At the end of the course, the students are required to present a Timeline project that covers certain eras and they apply what is leaned to the timeline.
