I love the CATS system
Ilove theminute papers I instituted this last course & gave point for content and it really gives me a birds eye view where my students are. I assessment leads where we go day to day ats Instructors.
How a student learns is key and basic knowledge for Instrcutors who want to e effective.

I haven't used CATS before either. I think this a great idea and plan to share this with my students. Of course we don't like change and students may freak out, but it will be benificial in the long run. thank you for this info.
Hi Katherine, Thanks for your post to the forum. If CATs are used regularly, they become part of the classroom routine.
Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

I have never seen this done before but think it is a great idea. Yes, I agree that some students might freak out about having to write this but if it is ungraded as most CATS are then they will be alright with it. I can the the important potential for this type of assessment to help both the instructor and the students.
It gives the students the opportunity to express themselves and give honest feedback.
I am also a fan of the CATS method, it gives us an opportunity to access the students without it negatively affecting the students.
The minute papers, I think, can be very enlightening. The students will have to be able to think quickly and write quickly. This can give both student and instructor insight as to their writing skills and their thinking skills. Some students, the minute you say write me a paper, start to freak. If you inform them of the purpose of the minute paper, some will find this to be a fun challenging experience. Others may find this to be a very hard task because they may not have paid enough attention during the lecture.
