formative evaluation
I am an advocate of formative evaluation. It lets the student know where they stand in the course. My formative evaluation strategies consists of quizzes, tests and an occasional group project.
I have the main course evaluations, but add in extra credit points at random on course studies and test. I feel this keeps the students on their toes and also gives them a sense of looking for bonus opportunities.

I have similar tools that I use in class as well. I also like to utilize my class/ student portal to show every project, quiz and exam at the beginning of the term so that students know what they will be in for and there will be no suprises down the line. It allows me to communicate my expectations from day one and can let me reinfoce this as the term progresses.
