Student Learning
Hi,
Is it better to have a daily quiz at the beginning or end of the class?
Thanks,
Andy
Hi Janet, Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree that review is important. There is no point to trying to build on knowledge that does not exist. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

it is better to have a review quiz at the beginning of each class. The instructor can determine the amount of information retained and what areas need to be reviewed.
When teaching history, I always give a review quiz from the prior class. After the quiz I will ask, how will the information you have learned from the prior class help you understand the concept on the board?
Hi Briana, I agree - it also allows us to tailor our instruction for the next class.

I think its best to do it at the end of the class to assess what the students are retaining and how effective your delievery of the information was and/or how you can improve.
at the end of class so both the instructor and student can see how much of the information that they went over, was retained and how much they understand of what they went over.
I agree with this I always give them at the begining of the class to assure ontime arrival
Hi Eric, Thanks for your post to the forum. Quizzes at the start of class also tends to ensure on-time arrivals. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.

Giving quizzes at the beginning of class work well for me because the student get to go home in a relaxing atmosphere to review the content learned that day.
I think giving quizes at beginning is good but also think giving at end is good, to see what students have learned thorugh class as well..
I agree with you on this answer. I also think that you might need to have some discussion on the quiz topics and you can't do that when the students are ready to leave your classroom.
Hi Andrew, Thanks for your post to the forum. I think it is best to give quizzes at the beginning of class. This encourages students to be on time. It also eliminates prolonged test anxiety which can interfere with learning of new material. In addition, students can just be tired at the end of a class session. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career.
