Computerized Testing
The certification exam that my students must take after graduation has recently changed from a written to a computerized test. I am trying to find ways to expose my students to taking standadized tests on a computer, so that there won't be that added anxiety during the certification exam. I must admit that I am not a fan of this style of testing, it seems limited.
Technology... what do you do other than adjust. I would say implement practice/ sample exams or your own creation via an electronic tool. We use blackboard and we have many programs that require certification all offered via electronic testing. Its a great tool once you learn all of its capabilities as it offers various questioning methods and statistical analysis.
Hi Claire- I like computerized tests if it is possible for the program to give the students the correct answer and even better- WHY that answer is the correct one. Susan
Although computerized tests do have their limitations, one thing I like about them is that students get immediate feedback. I also like it that the students can take the tests multiple times and the computer will mix up the order of the questions and the answers, so students can't just remember that on the long one, it was the first answer, etc.
The statistical breakdowns you can get when these sorts of tests are scored can also be useful for analysing the test itself.
Hi Holly- Thanks for your post to the forum. Helping your students to be more comfortable with online tests is really important. Many certification exams have sample tests online. What program do your students take? What is the exam? I'll see what I can find for you. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
Computerized testing is the current wave for almost all licensure exams for most fields. Most of these exams have practice or sample tests that can be tried. Perhaps you could create a few yourself that will give learners the confidence to complete such online tests?
