I'd Like to Know
What do you think are the most successful assessments?
Hi Melissa- I agree - mock interviews are an excellent assessment of some important job readiness skills. It also assesses soft skills - especially communication abilities. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
I believe the skill application testing method is the best way to test a student's knowledge on what they learned in class and their ability to apply that information. Since I teach Career Development, one of my favorite assessments is the Mock Interview. Students have to put together all the materials they have leared to prepare and follow through with all of the techniques and tips we talked about in class when we covered the interview process.
Hi Amy - Thanks for your post to the forum. I agree- the bottom line is "Can they apply what they have learned?". Best wishes - susan
Skill application! Of course there is no simple answer to such a complex question, but if my students and I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one kind of test, that's what I would choose. I love to see them do what they learned. It's more than repeating what they heard/read. It best shows that they are able to be successful in whatever new field they are pursuing.
Hi Joy - Thanks for your post to the forum. You are using an effective progression in the level of your assessments. Great work! Susan
It depends on the level of the course. For introduction/foundations classes, I use multiple choice and short answer since the class is focused on learning key information necessary for future classes. For upper level classes I rely on essay tests or papers- I want to see them use course concepts, explain them and apply them.
That's a great question. I think it depends a little on the class and the students. I rarely use true/false questions. I like to use multiple choice, matching, essay, and skill application problems. I think a good mixture of types makes for the best kind of test.
Hi Margaret- Thanks for your post to the forum and a complex question! A good assessment gives us a clear picture of whether the student has learned what we intended he/she to learn. In other words has the student achieved the competencies set by the curriculum? Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan
