Testing

IO do not like standarized tests, bcajuse students are at different places. A true accurate measure is what you taught in class and went over. I don't believe I got to play the I Gotta Game

Test should be on what you taught in class, and make sure that all the questions on the test match your answer key.

Hi Lisa- Thanks for your post to the forum. If it is just a few students that do not do well in a test and a repeat of that test that is one thing. However, if it is a majority of the class, then you need to review how the material was taught and also at the test itself. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

i give my studenta a practice test first to see how much they learned and if they dont do so well i let them use that as a study guide and give them the test next time we meet and see how well they do then if they still dont do well i give them extra credit work reports and projects and etc

I agree, as a visual learner and a teacher of the visual arts that standardized test are not accurate measurements of what students have learned in a course. I prefer having the students work on a standard type of writing formula through out the semester for each exam. This way the students are challenged to use terms learned earlier in the semester and the student sees their progress.

I like to use a variety of test forms. Multiple choice and true/false are okay to assess knowledge; however, I also try to include knowledge application formats including short answer or short essay. Standardized tests can be useful if you are selective in including questions that fit your objectives.

Hi Carol- Thanks for your post to the forum. The application assessment that you describe is quite appropriate for the discipline that you teach. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I don't like standardized tests either. I have visual students in a fashion design/merchandising curriculum that retain more from hands on than from written testing. I prefer to have them create 2 things and then compare them.
