Selection of Test Material

Can we mix differents kind of test into one test?

I like to use all formats in a test. It clarifies the content and they have to learn the material and not memorize. This way they build up knowledge for other classes to come.

Hi Jacenta - Thanks for your post to the forum. Your rationale for your assessment choices is right on ! Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I agree. I have a mixture of test questions in a test because it will give all students the ability to succeed in questions they are better at instead of focusing on just 1 main type of test questions. Plus it offers me the opportunity to ask various aspects of a concept, not just focus on one aspect.

It is important that we give test over the material that was or is being covered, however i personally put materialon my test just to see if my students are reading their text books.

Hi Diane - Although I don't know what discipline you teach, the assessment choices that you mention are very comprehensive. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

When I'm giving a 100 point test, I'll usually have 10-15 true/false, 35-40 multiple choice, and either five ten-point or ten five-point short essay questions.

Hi Lisa- Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that it really depends on the length of the test. For a short test or quiz I would limit the variety of assessment types. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

When mixing different types of questions, do you find that limiting it to two or three types is best?

Hi Diane -Thanks for your post to the forum. I think that generally it is a good idea to vary the types of assessments we use for the reasons that you mention. Best wushes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

I usually mix different kinds of tests in one test for the same reason we teach to different learning styles. Some people "test better" with multiple choice, some with short answer, etc. I think this helps put students at ease.

Hi Michelle- Thanks for your post to the forum. I also try to use a mix of assessment types as I think it is generally more fair for the students.

We need to test the students on what we teach and nothing else.To many times other extras inter in and mess the student up.

I always mix my tests with multiple choice, true/false and fill in the blank. I find it keeps the students more on there toes.

Hi Denise- Thanks for your post to the forum. Yes, definitely -you can usr a mix of assessments in any one test. It just depends on what you are trying to assess. For example is you are trying to assess whether students understand and can explain concepts in an Ethics class, True/False would probably not be a good choice but essay would be.
