testing

I always use multiple choice so i can cover everyone learning ability

Hi Duffy - Thanks for your post to the forum. Right On ! Assessment should never be about what is easier for the instructor. We really need to be thinking about how to best assess what we have
taught. Best wishes for continued success in your teaching career. Susan

while any method of testing can be valuable, i frequently use subjective methods when testing students in design studio courses. some testing seems to be geared toward making the evaluation process easier for the instructor. lazy. evaluation is the completion of the teaching process and must be embraced rather than avoided.

I like to mix it up with multiple choice, T/F, completion, short answer and an essay question to choose from. I feel like it gives everybody an area where they can focus their strengths and ablilities. Some of my students like multiple choice and some prefer the short answer because it gives them a more "open" area to answer questions with. I find that if I use an essay question that I make more of an impact if I give them case studies or how they can respond to the situation. Most of the time these are topics that we have covered in class. The mixture of questions breaks up the test so if someone is really bad a completion they know that is only a portion of the test and that is an area they need to work on.

I use multiple choice questions also but have incorporated matching and T/F more because I can cover more content and the who what where and when questions. This course helped to spread more of the content of my class in different forms of checking the knowledge that my students should know.

Multiple choice works will and covers the students learning ability
