Quizzes and Test
I like to use Completion test as well as multiple choice. I find that my students like them better because true and false can be tricky.Completion test we all aer looking for that one answer.
I prefer using a variety of tests at one time - I use True/False, Multiple-Choise and Short-Answer tests. This gives me an idea of the base knowledge of the students and where to improve and discuss.
We use ASE based tests so I use the same style of questions during lecture.
When I teach Acoustic physics my quizes are fill ins. This is one course that the student needs to know the answers to. The final is multiple choice. Dennis
I personally like to mix up the question bank. Mulitple choice, true and false, completion, and one or two essays.
Ido like your comment on this ,if they are answering the questions in a more like sentence you realy see if they no the best choice for the topic being asked about.
Ialso liked Multiple Choice but I will mix it up with short answers.

I think that is important point. In customer service training,as well as diagnostics, its important for our students to develop comunication skills to build confidence with their customers when they graduate and enter that service career.
I like to use test tha require that students answer the questions in complete sentences. This lets me know that the students are knowledgable of the question being asked.
Hi Fred - I especially like that you take "True/False" to a higher level!

I like Fred's approach! I have always used short essay in all but the most technical courses that I teach - but I'm going to give his "explain your reasoning" approach a try!
I use a combination of completion, multiple choice and true and false. It has been my experience that too often students look for a word bank which makes it too easy. I give key terms, abbreviations and acronyms for all my chapters which I give as a handout. Once it is given to the student it is fair game. They are to study them and they all coincide with the chapter. We do warm up exercises in class for bonus points individually or as a group. My true and false fosters critical thinking, if the answer is false they are to tell me what would make it true. They seem to enjoy my format. The overall key to the above is to consistently study nightly!
