Alessandra,
I think too often we abandon the index/flash card ideas to elementary school but they have always been helpful to me in learning terminology, theories, vocab, etc.

Cathy this is a great idea, I too bring them to the board and have them asking questions to their friends. The purpose is to have them break the "ice" in between them.

Hi Merrick this is a great idea. I also do some fun activities trying to encourage reading and discussions in the class. I teach medical classes were spelling can be a bit challenging. We use index cards after reading a chapter to increase their knowledge and spelling.

Merrick ,
this is a great way to keep them engaged & also to help them be more comfortable speaking.

in my class we do alittle activity where we pass a ball around and each student that catches the ball and gives a response to the topic at hand

Richard,
this is a great point to highlight. We need to be aware of all the different times when attention may lag or brains get tired & find creative ways to keep them engaged.

We know about and address active, engaged learning after lunch to address the doldrums. I have found it equally important, though, to have active learning opportunities for those first classes in the morning when the the students are excited about the start of the day and full of energy and enthusiasm (although that might be coffee, too).

I've tried this with my math class and it works great. Bringing them up to the board to work on problems gets everyone engaged and they start helping each other.

Jessica,
this is a great idea, it can be as simple as giving them a discussion question where they have to get up & find someone across the room.
