Letting go in order to facilitate rather than lecture.

Many inexperienced teachers will have difficulty
letting go of the teacher role and moving into
the facilitator role. What exercises can help
them in this transformation?

I find that in developing group activities, team discussion, or simple classroom presentations which involve the required objectives place me in the facilitator role.

Ralph,
I would encourage them to seek to ask more thought provoking questions instead of relying on lecturing so much.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I like the flipped classroom. Students are assigned a topic which they prepare for at home prior to the next class session. The instructor then facilitates discussions on the topics related to that day's objectives. The involvement of the student in the preparation of the material for the presentaion/discussion in class is a great learning opportunity. The instructor moves from the role of a lecturere to facilitator.
