Im color Blind

Ok so i'm color blind and I have noticed that students tend to react to lighting a bit more than color.

Most of the course I teach is on a projector and having a low light classroom before class starts helps, because they get in the mood for the class.

We wen to a lighting change so that the lights in the front can be turned off while maintaing light through the rest of the room. This makes it able for the student to continue to see there books and notes while allowing the projector to still be viewed.

I also find that leaving someone in charge of adjusting the lights between overhead projections, videos and full lighting really helps keep them alert.

Hi Brian!

Yes, I think that low lighting creates many distractions for students. I really like natural light in a class room. It seems to have a postive effect on students ability to better concentrate.

Keep up the good work!

I think low light in the classroom encourages to cat nap or play/text on their cell phones. I limit the time with projectors or film to try to limit this action by my students.

In my classroom we have many powerpoints to show. So also leave what lighting I can on during the show, stopping every 15 minutes to to dicuss what we just saw. With the lights all on, it works well.

When I show videos during class, I only turn off the lights surrounding the projector screen for this very reason. If you pick the right color scheme in whatever you project on the screen, generally you don't need to turn the lights down.

i find that if the lighting is low thay tend to fall asleep in the classroom.

Thanks for your comments, Joseph! So many classrooms have a bland, generic look; to your point about wall art, this is a good example of providing a more stimulating and engaging learning space; additionally, anything that shows activity is helpful; I remember from corporate training days that we used to cover the room in flipcharts, examples, resources, etc. to make the learning space relevant and interactive.

i think light and color go hand in hand. we have over head lights and computer and over head projectors and all these lights do distract from learning. we have painted the walls a tan color and also try to use bright wall art to give some life to the room.

I am very cautious with low light in a classroom. It tends to put people in a sleepy mood and reduces discussion, which I think is critical to learning. Can you switch between projector and full light to keep people alert?
