Assembly contest

I have my student teams compete for engine assembly time and ,of course, correctness and function. They really pay attention during the lectures.

Sounds good. I have tried a variation of this but I like your ideas.

We use a portion of our course as a contest as well. It's rewarding to lecture a student on material they are interested in and watch them perform their hands on activity as you unleash the reigns.

Hi Luis!

What a great way to help students feel successful! Keep up the good work!

This is always a great way to get students' competitive streak going. I put a bracket list on the board, everyone puts their names on it, and we have elimination rounds of side-by-side competitions breaking down and reassembling CV joints. The only reward for the winner is bragging rights, but that seems to be more than enough, and they really focus after they're done.

One of the things I used to do is during a review towards the end of a phase I created a jeopardy type game relating to the brakes class. Each questions had a different point value and the winning team got candy (not to eat in class of course!) This really provoked class participation.

I agree with John. An engine assembly contest is a great way to get the group communicating and working together. Placing a time limit on the exercise will force cooperation for the greater good, especially in groups that have trouble with cohesion.

I do something along the lines of that. I dismantle a component without the students looking. I then give them ample time to reassemble the component. Doing this they learn to shed intimidation and feal the reward of successfully assembling the component. This teaches them an approach they can use in many instances in the future. They have always responded with enthusiasm after the completion of the project.

Great!

on the last day we usualy have all assignments done so to keep the students interested we set up a shop appoint a service manager, form teams and proform the tasks that we learned thruout the class. except this time each job has a dollar value. at the end we add the totals up and see which shop "made the most Money".
