Use of Case Studies as a demonstration of learning
I teach foreign students in foreign countries and use Case Studies created by the students to demonstrate what they have learned in the course. This seems to be effective based on the results experienced.
We are a private trade school aimed at supplying people to two trades in the construction industry. Students with experience find out why they had to do certain tasks a certain way. We discus (usually informally) about problems and how they were overcome or caused problems, mainly financial or, code compliance, usually resulting in going out of business or close to it.
Recently we finished some re-habbing of our building and classes we have had are of the opinion they would noy want to for the contractor or hire them.
I agree. This ties the actual life experience with the class materials.
Hello Elsie! I am in a similar situation as you are in that my Medical Assisting students will not enter their clinical externship until their last semester at the school. Therefore, I have used case studies to "simulate" the externship experience. My case studies include "role playing" (one student is the patient and the other the MA and vice versa)and skills practice (we focus on the skill being taught at that time). The case study format incorporates many aspects of the Multiple Intelligences (MI's)and has been well received by the students. I am anxious to employ some of the debriefing activities I have learned about in this module as I think I may glean more insight from the students as to how to enhance the case study experience for them. I agree! I use a lot of case studies in our program as well and it makes its easier for them to understand using real world scenarios about topics needed to effectively perform a task.
I work in acute care setting and teach vocational nursing with almost no acute care rotation. Use of case studies based on what I had seen at the bedside helps bring real acute care experience to my studenst.
