Simulation

I did not know that simulation was the better way to learn even though I have employed it in facilitating the learning process in my classroom. Positive reinforcement that such a practice works best!

My experience with the student's first simulation is a reptilian response. I explain the simulation, demo the simulation, reassure the students, and talk them through the simulation, and still I get an 70-80% reptilian response!! I am so aware of this response, I start coaching the second the student pauses for longer than 1 minute. The very first simulation elicits the strongest reptilian response. I have come up with other simulations and role playing of the simulation before the real simulations actually are graded. I even tell them they can relax, it will be a "practice" simulation, and about 60% of the time the student relaxes and can move really easily through the simulation. I surprise the student and reward them with a really great grade that is well-deserved. Debriefing is so key after these "emotionally traumatic" simulations. I let the student describe the simulation, what worked, what didn't work, and how I could better facilitate the simulation for them. The debriefing seems to help the students be less anxious for the next simulation.

Marilyn,
great comment! The power is in the debrief & we must make sure it is a powerful debrief!

Dr. Ryan Meers

I know that there is much research to show that simulation especially with debriefing. It is amazing the insight the students gain with guided debriefing.

I do prefer this method and will continue to do so.
