learning activites

It is sometimes hard for me to do other activities but I more aware that changing up is a good thing and it does break from lecturing to actually using other techniques to make the room lively and more interesting for the learner. I will figure out some new ideals and work with that and see how I can work that in the class room.

Tracy,
it really is a good strategy to try & use all of the learning styles as much as possible, this way you know you are reaching the learners.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Since I am not with the students for a long period of time (3 weeks) I don't have enough time to really get to know how they learn best, so we have incorporated all three learning catagories, Auditory - Lectures, Visual - Demo and then Kinesthetic - Hands on labs. This way each student is subjected to the combination of intake learning styles.

I agree that doing activities really help the students. I find it so hard when there is massive amounts of material to cover it seems. How do you allow class time for the materials without getting behind? Especially with material that is technical and requires a good amount of memorization.

Andrea ,
yes and it's a great demonstration to our students when we are willing to step out of our comfort zone.

Heidi,

this is a great technique & adding a debrief is a great way to further solidify the learning in this situation.

I think as educators it is very easy for us to teach within our own comfort zone. Most of our students are tech savy and really tune in when technology is incorporated. This is a bit of a stretch for me, but very effective for them.

I agree, I also teach in the medical field and I usually give a demonstration first then I have them practice with a partner. Later, I have them change partners so that they can experience doing a skill on a different person.

Tracey,
this is a great way to introduce the content & help them see the applicability as well as to reinforce the concepts.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Lecturing for 20 minutes and putting it into practice is extrememly effective. I teach in the MA program at my school and find it effective to show the basics to perform a BP and then have them perform it. Then the rest of the week we discuss the importance and the other need to know information while continuing to do BP at the end of each class.

Kelly,
this is definitely a challenge. I find that by keeping a good set of questions handy this helps them stay focused on what we are discussing.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I often use activities in my classroom but I often find that the students get distracted and off topic. How do you keep them on task?

Agree, thinking out of our usual box is different but worth a try. I will implement as many of these ideas as i can as soon as i can

Betty,
I agree & once you have found a learning activity you can use it multiple times with your various classes.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I feel the time commitment is well worth it when the students are learning and excited about what they learn. The payoffs are remarkable.

delmera,
it really is a commitment of time both before & during class to add in various activities. But the payoff can be very beneficial if we do take that time.
