positive reinforcment

I find that positive reinforcment even for a partial correct answer and having the other students add to the answer in a open discusion format takes the stress off of the students and makes them more willing to participate and boost their self confidence.

openly discussing a subject in front of your fellow students can be very stressfull to some students. I use positive reinforcment if the answer is right or not. As said by another instructor here " You answer is partially right" Then go into the parts they missed. The students seem to stay active in the discussion as long as the mood stays possitive.

When I critique students food I need to tell them what is right as well as wrong. I try to always finish with what they did right.

i like to play it up a little when the students start to connect with information that is going out to them

I also use this approach this is a good way to correct the student without making them feel as though they have understanding on the topic.

it is important to show a positive reinforcement when someone has an incorrect answer. otherwise the outcome can have more negative effects on one's willingness to respond to future questions.

Hi Scott!

I am a firm believer in positive reenforcement because the behavior that is reenforced is the behavior you will continue to see.

Keep up the good work!

Agree. Confidence and application have been an important combination in my classes thus far. Reinforcing effort and fringe correct answers has allowed for the difference

I must commend you on your diplomatic approarch when given the incorrect answer. As instructors we want to praise them for attempting to answer the question in an open forum of peers. Also never detour them to answer questions in the future due feeling ridiculed for giving wrong answers. It's our JOB to support as well as teach and in most cases you have to get the answer wrong in order to learn it.

Hi Jane!

Positive reenforcement is the best tool in our kit. When people feel good about themselves, they are much more likely to be successful. We can point to disfunctional families where children have been abused and see the many problems that result - particularly that of low self-worth.

Keep up the good work!

Positive reinforcement and group discussion is a great way for students to boost their self confidence. It is also serves as a support system for students who don't have support outside school. Any positive that can be incorporated into a classroom will help boost confidence and a willingness to participate. I think that it also helps students to focus on particular points of important subject matter.

I agree completely since people need to know where and perhaps how they went wrong but told in such a manner as to learn from it and not just they were wrong. I have learned also that when positive reinforcement is practiced, students tend to trust the instructor more. They will also be more active in the classroom setting.

Positivity is always a good way to end the answer that may be answered wrong. Toss it around to get the right answer through the brain storming of the question. This will help absorb the information for all.Student like the critical thinking.

I agree. I always respond to an incorrect answer with: "You are partially correct, but can you or anyone else provide the missing information?" This seems to help get others involved as well.

Group discussions are a very useful tool that shows the rest of the students in class where they stand in terms of their knowledge. This is helpful because many times they realize that they were not the only person in the room that had that question or that did not understand a concept. Group discussions eliminate some of the anxiety the students sometimes feel about answering questions.

Positive reinforcement lets the student have confidence in themselves

Yes I agree. Any honest positive reinforcement we can give to a student helps. I don't want the student to think I am just looking for ways to encourage them but I want it to be natural and real to them.

i agree it makes a welcoming learning environment
