Retention

As an instructor coming to class prepared and have my objectives on the board the students will stay focused and i have found that to be effective for my retention in my class.

Patricia,
And I think if we can design assessments to mirror these conditions (as much as possible) we can help them realize how much they have learned.

I get some very motivated students in my respiratory classes. Retention is every instructors gold ring for these students. These are adult learners who fear that have not learned enough. They sop up knowledge like a sponge but still they fear the medical challenges and board exams. I keep telling them, "I am teaching you layers of knowledge building upon each layer." Sometimes they don't realize how much information that they have retained until they take their first "Board" exam and pass with flying colors.

Very true statement. I have often found through my 13 plus years of tenure, that often the retention process is very suttle. One day they don't think they have learned a thing, then suddenly that little light in the brain turns on and they realize they know so much more about the subject then they ever thought they would.
This is that moment that you hoped for, that moment when you feel you were placed on earth for a specific purpose!

david,
This is very true & sometimes it's a matter of helping the student realize how much they really have learned as they think they haven't learned anything, but really they have.

Retention is important. As we all know learning is not easy, it is a challenging process. Weh students feel that they are not learning, growing and developing they are incline to miis class or drop out completely. It is important to work with every student to make sure some form of learning occurs in every class session.

Georgia,
Yes & when we put the objectives up for the students to see it demonstrates our preparedness & also gives them another reference point for learning.
