Preparation is Everything

This is a catch phrase from my culinary school and it not only is a mantra that serves chefs well, but also in the teaching world. Many students are very IN TUNE with what topics are being discussed and many like to challenge instructors if they are slack on info. With that being said the other students that are not in tune can also become more un-attached to the class if you are lost in the information your are trying to convey.

Agreed. Lead by example. If you are late for class it tells the students that it is ok to be late and they won't take you or the class seriously.

Kevin,
yes, there really is no substitution for being prepared.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

if you are not well prepared, the students will quickly pick up on that and eat you alive. best way to avoid that is to be prepared.

I agree, students are always watching out for things they can blame you for. If you are not on time and prepared then they will be slack about getting to class and being prepared themselves. As an instructor you can only expect to get from the students what you are giving them.

I agree 100%. We review all the material in depth then I assign it as homework to review and list questions to ask at the beginning of the next day. It is very easy to tell who is not prepared as they have no hand written notes and are reading out of the book like they have never seen the material before. I tell them this is your education and you will need to put effort into it if it's important to you. You would not go to your job unprepared so why would you think it is ok to go to school unprepared!?

Donald,

I too am realizing the importance of that review time before the class to make sure I'm where I should be for the day's lesson.

I agree with you. I go over all my material every day before class. When i do this i look for new waays to present it to them that might help them

Absolutely, if you are not prepared for a trade class students will rip you apart then leave early!

Richard,
yes, the preparation is really key, even when we've presented this material many times before.

getting ready for the class with a lot of time ahead is extremely important because allows us to know the difficult part of the lecture, how to make it easy for the students ,what situations from normal life to bring to make them understand what you mean,to know all the material to be able to answer any questions from the students .

True that. If you are not prepared, students pick up on it very quickly. Therefore, it is important to "be prepared".

Kristina ,
I agree that being concise is a key skill.

Dr. Ryan Meers

Students get confused very easily if you are not concise with your material
