Merrick ,
this is a great technique & reviewing key points the next time is great too.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

i use repetition on a hourly basis. I always go over my lecture twice and then ask the stduents to recite it back to me

Cathy,

And this just makes sense from so many parts of our life: sports, music, etc. Why wouldn't it be true for academics?

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I agree. I'm always telling my students that the more they practice by working out the math problems, the better they'll get at it. Practice makes perfect!

The first time a student trys a task, they probly wont compleat it fast. the mor times they do the task, they will have a beter understanding of the procedure and there time will improve.

Kim,
yes, this is a great way to show the improvement, especially if you give them the chance to reflect on that.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I agree. It also helps to build confidence in the students ability to see their own improvement."Like what the hand repeats over and over it remembers"

Agreed,
Students can lose interest and actually do worse if you are not careful.

You have to be very careful with teaching repetition. it can be harmful in some enviroments

Michael,
this is a great way to build that mental & muscle memory while adding additional concepts.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Repetition helps my students build confidence and speed. I teach mechanics so it is necessary almost on a daily basis to do repititious work. The student gets to tear down the top end for example and then the next day build upon that by going into the bottom end.

Michael,
yes the more the students are involved with the effort the better they will retain the information.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I would add that alternating repetition (having the students repeat things back to me as well) has proven effective for memorizing. I also allow students to come up with better ways of memorizing (rearranging items in a list in a way that works better for them). I'm not above using whatever works!

Christine,
the old adage is very true, repetition aids learning.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Once I have them complete lab activities over and over again, they retain very well.

I agree with scott repitition does build confidence. There is a saying that say "practice makes prefect.

Repetition builds confidence in the student. It helps prove to the student that they are capable of doing it.

Jeannette,
and really repetition is the key to learning & retention.
