Walking Around

I think walking around while you lecture is good. It work for me because you make the students feel comfortable with you. Also, they free they have a better access to you.

The truth is that I'm not comfortable with all of the course content /teaching yet but am working on it.

Michael,
yes this is something that we all must continue to work on, but sounds like you have a great strategy.

Getting away from the lectern may be easier if you are using Powerpoint, in most circumstances. The classroom layout plays a huge role in this. I teach in room with two screens for Powerpoint and a lectern in the middle of each screen. I can get out from behind the lectern but have found myself spending a lot more time on one side of the room vs. the other. Even during instruction I tell myself I need to move and usually but it feels and comes off kind of akward. I try to stick to the rule of moving to another location in order to transition to the next point. It is truly an art, one that I will keep working to perfect.

Carrie,
I think you hit on a key point in that second idea. When we can move away from our lectern, we demonstrate a knowledge & comfort with the material.

I agree the students feel more comfortable and it shows that you are comfortable with what you are lecturing on.

I agree
