Delivering a lecture to keep students engaged

Delivering a lecture to keep students engaged
When delivering a lecture to my class I focus on the students I recall the first day they attended class and I recall the student’s first day’s note. What they may have told about them self’s and incorporates what I can into the lecture; this help the students relate the information. I also make sure I use a lot of inflection in my voice to make important points as well let them know which points are important.

Terry,
yes, the movement/gestures are a good way to maintain attention. Although as you point out here, we do have to be careful with how much (especially we hand talkers!).

While lecturing, I try to use body language as much as possible, without distraction, of course. By emphasizing with my hand and arm movements, I can highlight main points. While this is usually effective, one time I was lecturing with a microphone, I kept moving my hands away with the mike and my voice faded in and out. I didn't realize this until after the lecture when someone pointed this out!!!

Mary,
this is a great strategy & as you said helps the students to relate to what you're saying when you relate it to them.
