Eye contact helps me determine if the students understand me or not. and it also helps me to see who is paying attention in class.

I couldn't agree more. I make an effort to make eye contact with EVERY student in my classroom during lecture, not just with those who I feel are paying attention.

I have noticed that when I make eye contact with the students, I get more responses to questions. When they are not sure of the answer, they avoid looking me in the eye. At that point, I rephrase the question.

I have always felt that eye contact with students is so important. Students feel they are part of the conversation that is taking place. I believe students will want to join in on "class participation".
