Using groups with self-paced classes

Most of the classes I teach are self paced and computer based. I would be interested in how you have used groups in a self-paced environment.

Group work can be as simple as a discussion question at the end of the lecture, reading or chapter. Good discussion forces the students to formulate an opinion based on their learning and experience.

Group projects that foster critical thinking and force students to draw conclusions from their research can apply to any curricular content and are the most productive. The 'product' should embrace various learning styles and allow students to use their creativity within the parameters of the assignment.

For example: Civil Right Movement, this could be a topic in history, sociology,or literature.

Groups create an oral presentation that includes the historical perspective, biographical information and the impact of the event on society today. Groups select the method of presentation: they could perform a drama, create a video,write a poem or song or make posters or use PowerPoint. Each group selects an event from a list provided by the instructor, they may choose Rosa Parks on the bus, Martin Luther King's march in Washington & Dream speech,the Woolworth Lunch counter, Ruby Bridges' school year, etc.

You are putting real work experience into the group process! You hve the perfect environment. For those instructors who have less hands-on classes, would you please make some suggestions on how group work could be handled.

Most of my classes computer based and self-paced are as well. I use group work to simulate real world job situations after introducing a new concept. For example, after learning how to format and create a memo, I give each group an office scenario and ask them to compose and format a memo. Scenario examples are: Create a memo explaining the new wellness program and prize incentives; create a memo explaining the Professional Development Program and requirements for certification;etc. After the group creates a memo together,each student must create an original memo for their portfolio, group members act as peer tutors and peer evaluators to ensure proper grammar and format before completing the assignment.

This works well for newsletters or multipage documents that require collaboration.
