There are generally two types of learning groups that instructors use. These are known as informal and formal groups:
This is a key point that I will employ, hopefully with very successful results for the benefit of my students
These are the two Kinds of study groups that work well with students. The do better if they have some freedom and stucture at the same time.
Informal groups-A temporary clustering of Groups created to complete a specific task, such as a lab assignment, case study, or project. The members may be assigned to the group for the entire course or until the assignment is completed. FORMAL- Groups created to complete a specific task, such as a lab assignment, case study, or project. The members may be assigned to the group for the entire course or until the assignment is completed.
Could you please describe the differences between both group types (based on your experience, of course)? I have used the notion of informal learning groups to allow stronger students to mentor weaker students, and to encourage participation from passive or otherwise shy students.
