Evaluation individual students working on group projects

A modulars ago, I assigned group projects to students. Everyone worked well together except one group. There were two slackers. Ironically, these two slackers had the same issue with another instructor prior to coming to my class but yet, they chose to work together again.

One the day when the project was due, I had each person from each group grade their fellow classmates. To my surprise, they were all fare. As for the slackers, first student did not come to school. that student received a zero. The second student, stayed in the LRC all class section to make up project. The second student not only was marked absent, also got 60% for the project. It was late, unorganized, errors and so forth.

As a result, I decided to use this individual assessment form for group projects. It works well and the feedback is great.

Greetings Helen!

I like this approach as well. When the final presentation isn't a group project, but individual, I would think that students don't feel like they have been left "holding the bag".

Keep up the good work!

Interesting! I may have to try this.

That sounds like an interesting way to handle this. I do peer evaluations and they are allowed to have 10% of their grade go torward these evaluations. Not all student's participate. This is my only problem with allowing them to be a part of the grading process. Getting them to follow through can be problemmatic at times.

About 2 modulars ago I did the same thing, but what i did different than I had before, was every one in the group had a separate part to do , and each person had a report day to show, their work. This worked for me because the student that didnt forfill their part had to take the responsibilty, and except the grade they received and the rest of the group didnt feel they were penalty for the slacker.
