Monitoring Students
Students should be monitored from the first day of class and each day thereafter. This allows the instructor to determine if there are problems, etc. that are starting among students in the classroom. This will allow the instructor to intervene and resolve the problems before they get too far out of hand. Monitoring also allows the instructor to see the personalities, attitudes and behaviors of each student in the classroom.
Besides monitoring the class by walking around, I keep a closer eye on the students who do not participate as much. Observing their scores and assignments can tell if they are just shy or if they are struggling. It is good to also have a good communication system in and out of the classroom, like email. Some students do not like to ask for help around their peers.
Monitoring also allows the instructor to see if students need help. Sometimes they would not ask questions because they are embarrssed or shy. I walk around the room and check if anybody needs help.
This is very helpful to allow the instructor to adapt as needed. This is also where if adaptations need to be made a back up plan is helpful. This all helps relieve stress for the instructor and students.
I agree. Monitoring the students is a constant activity that plugs instructors in to the classroom dynamics. Classroom dynamics often change very quickly, especially with new students who are trying to find where they fit in. It is imperative that we don't miss those changes.
