Student Learning Groups

I find putting students in groups helps them to learn and digest new ideas. I use a random process by having them number off. I monitor all the groups by periodically moving from group to group. If you give each student a specific task, they are more likely to work well as a team. Any other ideas for having successful groups?

When putting students in groups there is more of a challenge between them, You also have to be careful, that it does not make make other's feel inferior, when they may not know as much as other's or are afraid to speak up

I will purposely choose students for learning groups who don't seem to typically "go together" socially, as well as plugging in students who are struggling academically with those who are not, so to bolster a more varied learning environment conducive to multiple levels of input.
