diversity

creating diverse learning groups allows to more student interaction and could help the instructor balance the dynamics of the class

Aki,
by embracing the diversity that we have in our classes we also help our students learn to appreciate diversity of opinions & perspectives so they are not locked into their way as the only way.

We live in a diverse country and serve a diverse population. By incorporating diversity into the classroom we are preparing the student for the workplace and the customers they will serve. I really enjoy working in this type of environment and I ensure that every student is aware of this. My words are reinforced by my actions. This attitude prepares each student for my class and what is acceptable in the workforce.

MUSU,
yes, while we want to establish an atmosphere that resembles the work environment this is the teaching time. We can intervene & help the students see where they are slacking & where they can be of greater help.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

Ryan, You are absolutley right. However since naturally people including our students are more likely to want to group-up with people they look like or are familiar with. It is an important aspect of our job as instructors to consistently ensure group diversity and monitor each members performance. I always tell my groups that they need to infrom me if any group member is slacking or does not want to do their work way ahead of project complection date otherwise it could impact the team overall performance.

Just as when you make a cake it takes alot of different ingredients to produce one cake. As it does with students they are just one individual component in the outcome of one discussion...

bess,
this is a great point that not only will many students have diversity in their coworkers, but also in the customers they serve.

provided practical experience to the student to deal more effectively with real customers when finally on the job.

Yolanda,
and what I've found that in these cases I often must be the one forming the groups to ensure that diversity.
