I prefer small groups and usually try to pair students who are at different levels in their understanding of the material as well as different social satus.
Mike,
one of the big reasons is that it provides a way for them to talk & discuss & share ideas which is always more engaging than being a passive listener.

i agree small group seem to be way easier to keep student interested
I like to do that as well. I really like the idea in the class with the ice breaker assignment. I am going to try
That in January for my next class start.
That is a good idea, in that way they can have a better understanding of the topic.
Pearlmarie,
this is a great observation & definitely true. There are merits to mixing up groups based on the certain activities or projects at hand.

I appreciate group work with our students, however I have found that I need to change the groups' membership based on the task at hand. I work with some ESL students and sometimes it works best to mix them with Eng. speaking students and other times it helps them if they are grouped together.
Shannon,
this is a great strategy as it really sets up the peer to peer learning & instruction.
