Diverse Learning Groups brings different life experiences that make learning more interactive and fun
Kristen,
Yes some learn better in these type of small groups rather than in the large lecture
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Yes I agree that small groups are important for a better learning experience in the classroom. ALSO A diverse number of learning styles is important as well.
Latoya,
I agree with you that these groups can be very helpful in assisting those students who may be struggling. I believe we also need to help students develop the skills necessary for this kind of group work. I believe too often we throw them in the groups without equipping them to be successful in these settings.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Absolutely, and this comes into play for my classes as I have students who are different ages and from different cultures so it takes some finessing to coordinate effective groups.
I agree with each comment that has been made in regards to diversity within learning groups. Also, when learning groups are chosen effectively they can be used as an opportunity to help students who may be struggling by grouping them with students that are showing a great amount of understanding of a topic that has been covered. By using this approach it still allows for the instructor to interact with each group and it can also give that struggling student a new way of receiving the information by hearing it from someone else's perspective. Only the instructor will know who is having the challenges and he/she can "secretely" spend an extra minute or two with the people who are having challenges. Lastly, group activities does make learning fun and changes the stimuli in the classroom.
Ronna,
this is exactly the reason why these small groups are good for our students. They do not get to pick their own groups or choose to work alone in their fields.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
My students, Surgical Technology students, have to learn how to cope with a diverse group. While working in the Operating Room one has to be able to work with individuals from different countries, different religions, and even different legal, ethical, and moral values. By seperating my students into groups that have them working with diverse people has helped to transition them into the OR environment. I am and always will be a great promoter of group dynamics for this reason alone.
Roshally,
and I believe this really reflects the diversity that the students will find in their work environments.
Ryan Meers, Ph.D.
Diversity learning groups exposed each members of the group to difference perspectives and values of other cultures.
Diverse learning groups also help the students to prepare for their careers as nurses.
Cory,
this is so true & the diversity is very reflective of what the students will be experiencing in their real life work situations as well.
