Teaching Medical Terms

We have very good instructional videos that help by using audionyms, so the student can learn the new medical terms. I have found however, that at the beginning of each chapter there are key words that are not part of their medical terms. I have decided to have my students write out these words and their definitions, before lecture on Monday. I feel that they will better understand the meaning of the chapter content and the lecture if they do this. They will be graded as a lab completion grade.

I like to us the DVD s that come with the book in class as a power point presentation. Sometime they come with games. Students sometime don't realize that they are learning if they are playing a game.

I make my students write the key terms at the beginning of each chapter as an assignment. this way they have a basic knowledge of what I will lecture on. I also use simple terms at first then apply medical terms in place of the simplified term. Example : down one, in one. This translates to 1 inch inferior and 1 inch medial. This seems to help them understand better at first then apply the correct term(s) after doing a hands-ons demonstration.

Greetings!

By guess is that learning medical terms is like learning multiplication tables - practice, practice, practice.

Keep up the good work!

Sending students to tutoring center is great for medical terms.

To help students with medical terminology, I often assign students to create index flash cards for prefix, suffix and word roots. For this assignment I provide colored pencils. Students are encouraged to prounce the term and the meaning as they study the terms. Flash cards also help with learning how to correctly spell the term. Students recieve an assigned grade for the flash card project.

I agree... I require that the student know the key terms at the beginning of each chapter prior to the lecture. I believe that if they have a basic understanding of the terms that are important in the chapter, they will get more out of the lecture.
