Job related skills.
It is very important to bring the text and profession together with real work examples.
It is imperative that you give, or bring relevance to everything you teach. This shows the students that, unlike high school world history, this course will, in fact, earn you money!
Personalizing material is the difference between an instructor and a teacher.
Real work examples are memorable and fun, when their presented well. I love sharing stories with my students because it shows them how I can relate to the content or subject, and it gives them real world testimonal examples.
I agree, I find that when I give my experiences in the criminal justice field to the students and then relate same to the class content, it helps students understand how important the class is to the real world.
I totally agree because then students become engaged knowing that work has everything to do with education. Using careers and job skills is an effective way to teach.
I find I get much more attention and enthusiasm from the students when I relate the text with my real world experience. If I do not give a real world scenario during lecture, my students will ask for one.
Dear John,
Right on! Many students do lose motivation for a certain subject if they are not informed how it is relevant to their future career while in college. I've seen it. On the other hand, if you do tell them how it may relate to having success later on in whatever they do I've noticed they will be more interested. This can be forgotten easy as you focus on what is to be covered in the class, however, student development should be your number one priority always!
I agree, I try to give examples of real world applications when I teach.
Hi John!
I couldn't agree more! An instructor is not doing their job if they are not preparing students for the work place.
Good job!
