Learning disabilities
I wasn't aware of the 15% of americans who have learning disabilities; this is major in my eye sight. It must be true "children learn what they live", I can not imagine just how many children go on in life and can not read nor comprehend what they are reading.
Who is at fault?
It is our job to show them their past does not dictate their future.
Yes children do learn what they live however there are exceptions to the rule. Who is at fault? Well most would say that the parents are at fault becuase they could not realize or even see that their child is having a problem however on the other hand children who have these disabilities get really creative and hide it pretty well sometimes skating through the system. Some would say it is the educators fault because they spend the most time with the child but again children can be very sly and sometimes manipulate the system and those working within that system. One in my opinion people need to pay attention to the overall learning of the child and if there are any red flags at all act upon it to help the child because sometimes children in silence are really crying out for help without expressing it verbally.
MICHELLE,
I think a lot of it is simply being unaware of the problems, symptoms, etc. Too often we just lable many of these students as "problems" or "lazy" without really understanding the underlyiing problems.
