pair them up with other bilingual students
Best way to help an ESL student is to pair them up with other bilingual students to assist students with esl
I really think this is a great idea-pairing up a 'C' student with an 'A' student. I've seen much success in a clinical setting with this technique!
That depends. Does one of a better command of English?
Jane,
this is a great strategy & it acknowledges that sometimes a student who "gets it" can explain the ideas or concepts better or in a more understandable way than we do.

I use the same technique with pairing up a "C" student with an "A" student. The "C" student hears information from a students' perspective and the "A" student feels like an "instructor" to reiterate the information in class.
Sona,
this is a great approach as it can really help the students where they need it the most.

Pairing an ESL student with other bilingual students is very helpful. I tried this successfully in my HS classes. I also tried to learn some common science and math words in spannish.
Bilingual students bring with them a knowledge base of language vocabulary that is rich in context and can help individual native students struggling to learn vocabulary in his/her own language see the meaning behind the vocabulary. I finally learned my own language of English by discovering forwards English word order, then was able to compare it to German word order which is backwards. In English verbs are in medial position in a sentence. In German verbs go at the end of sentences. By comparing where the verbs were located I comprehended sentence structure and semantics. I ended up retaining the knowledge long-term. I now let students in my classroom translate answers into their native language(s), then re=translate the answers into English. Side by side they begin to understand new vocabulary in English as it is used in context.

This might be kind of hard depending on the size of the classes. But it would be a good tool if there were enough students available
This sounds like a great idea. It will give the student support as well as someone for support and guidance through a difficult course.
