I agree that checking in during lecture with questions is a great idea for checking student comprehension. One thing though, is you have to be careful because if you ask general questions instead of asking specific students, don't you think you run the risk that the high achievers who aren't having trouble are the ones who will jump to answer the questions, while others may be too shy to do so?
