Learners with Disabilities

It is important to encourage students with learning disabilities

I couldn't agree more that you need to support these type of students so they can succeed in their careers. It is important to understand what supports they have used in the past and what has worked for them.

Great Paul! It sounds like to make your students feel very valuable and important to the learning process. Building someone's self esteem is often half of the battle.

Keep up the good work!

I find that when I know there is a person(s)in my classes with a learning disability it has been hepful to encourage them by using examples of the many wonderful accomplishments that have been made by people through out history by finding ways to overcome these barriers. I encourage them to make sure they keep me informed if I am getting too far ahead of them or to ask as many "appropriate" questions as they need in order to understand the materials. I also make sure that they know that I can be available to discuss any problems they have understanding the materials by making an appointment. Paul T. Rougemont

I have a student that adressed her learning disability at the begaining of the class. She said that she has a hard time writing and expressing what was required in coursework before which was in high school. I asked if she was dislexic and she said no. Unfortunately she was unable to describe her disability. You would come to conclusion that her high school teachers would have defined the disability. This will make it harder to help her, hopfully as the days of class continue I will be able to get a resonse as to what techniques can be used to help her pass the course and absorb the information.

Hi Tamara!

I couldn't agree more! The approach is very empowering for any student.

Good job!

Very nicely said Jake!

Individuals with handicapping conditions or learning challenges were probably labelled by their peers and the educational establishment in elementary school. So they have had both personal AND counter-productive eeducational experiences. It is a feit unto itself that some of these students are even pursuing higher education.

It is not an easy situation for an instructor to be in as most of us are not prepared to deal with students who may have special learning needs. But I do agree that positive reenforcement and empowering opportunities is an excellent approach.

Good job!

Agree in all areas to encourage and uplift the student to the evel of confidence

Hi Brittany,

I think that one of the reasons it is so vital to help encourage, support, and motivate students with learning disabilities is because there is, unfortunately, a greater likelihood that they have had negative or counter-productive educational experiences in their past. There are many reasons for this, not the least of which is a late (or even incorrect) diagnosis. It is important that we try to show them that persuing an education can truly be a rewarding, positive experience.
