blind student

We have a blind student in our massage therapy program and while I have not had him as a student yet, I know that other instructors have struggled with him. I know I will probably have him eventually and I am wondering how in the world I am going to make it work. I don't have any training (beyond this course) in how to instruct students with special needs. So much of what we do is visual and we teach with demonstrations and examples that he cannot see us perform. I am having a difficult time thinking of what I will be able to do to help.

I am a Lion Club member. The Lions in our community assisted in the purchase of equipment to help the visually impaired in our local Community College.
You may want to contact your local Lion Club to see if this is feasable in your area.

I too have had a blind student in my class & I was a bit unsure how to handle it. I teach culinary arts & knife skills are a part of class that is unavoidable.

I too have had a blind student in my class & I was a bit unsure how to handle it. I teach culinary arts & knife skills are a part of class that is unavoidable. It was difficult knowing how to teach as I did everyone else and would welcome thoughts/ideas from anyone else that has had this same issue so if I encounter it again in the future I will be better prepared to handle.

I have found having an employee with some deficit makes them work harder and also inspires others around them.

I had a blind student in the first class I taught -- it was a creative writing class, so different challenges than massage therapy.

My student was successful in class, though she had to work a lot harder than other students with some things, she inspired them to work harder as well.

Make certain your student sits close to you so he can hear everything you say. Try to think of tactile ways to illustrate a lesson that involves visuals.

Make certain you give enough time for the student to make his way to a new station or area in the classroom, if you are moving around a lot. The other students will help.
