Being Understanding

I have a student at the moment that is battling cancer. This gentleman is bright and enthusiastic. I find him to be a great example for other students that just can't stay focused. Of course I cannot share his situation with his fellow students. He is in treatment at the moment. He refuses to let it interupt his education. I work with him on a daily basis to make it easier for him to keep up with what he misses due to his treatment schedule.

I agree that it is important to assess each situation and take it from there. Respect for privacy, patience and understanding can make the situation manageable.

I have come acrossed similair situations where I feel the need to be a bit more understanding with certian students. I do find though that it is important to keep things according to the syllabus and if there are circumstances that can not be discussed as a classroom, then the classroom does not need to know about the extra understanding. I feel this way because I see it all to many times that other students will "create" situations of need based off of the fact that they want special treatment as well. So I find it important to access each situation and take it from there.
