instructing learners with disabilities

Allowing students activities is helpful

I once had a student with staying awake in class he even feel asleep on a test that he was taking. I then gave him a rubix cube to work with and that seem to help. A different activity doe's help.

In my area there are four instructors who teach the same content. My program director specifically assigned 3 students to each instructor. Those students then were required to meet with their assigned instructor for remediation (even if they didn't need it.)

This way, each student had the opportunity for tutoring, remediation or early intervention prior to the end of term.

It has been successful and no student feels left out, and even the timid one's don't worry about embarrasment because all students are required to meet with thier assigned instructor.

I have set office/tutoring hours and make sure any student that may need extra help knows. Unfortunately, I have one student who has has learning disabilities and has not come for extra help. In addition, there are times in class when we read sections and reach student take a paragraph. Whenever this starts, the student mentioned above leaves the room. I have talked to him, but it seems I can't get through. I think it's the embarrassment factor that comes into play. I don't want to single him out, obviously, any suggestions?

Go slow with all the students, so that the ones with disabilities don't fell like they are singled out.
