Students with disabilitys

I feel it is very important that the student let you know up front the first day that they have a problem. this way you can help the right from the start and they will not fall behind. catching up is hard to do .. I may have to explain something several different ways for the student to understand. Doing this in a group setting gives another prespective for the other students as well

Mandy,
yes, the key is to consistently demonstrate to our students that we are open to them & here to help.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I understand how important it is for that student to come up to you on the first day, however (in some cases) the reason they don't want to be viewed as "different, or dumb". Most will come to you later after they feel comfortable with you, because it's not an easy topic to talk about. I have a learning disability and it is the hardest thing admitting I am different. I do not want you to "take it easy" on me. I want you to push me, but to realize it just takes a little longer for me. I will tell you if you tell the students not to be afraid to come to you outside of class if they need to talk about this issue and have an open door they will be more likely to come to you sooner. Best of luck and keep change your style of teaching, because if they don't come to you.. you still can reach them by hands one ect.

I agree with you. Understanding the issue up front is the only way to lead the student to a successful class experience. When the class if half over and then I find out about a disability, it is frustrating to try and accomodate midway through the class.
