Dylexia

Learning more on this subject and hoe to handle when Student does not share the issue, untill it affect their grade.

John,
this is a great comment & I think underlies an important issue. Too often with dyslexia or other learning challenges, we will try to "help" the student fit into our mold of learning. What you highlight here is the need to help the student maximize his/her own strengths.

Brian,

That is very true. It is hard to understand dyslexia until you meet or work with someone with significant dyslexia. Yes, there are degrees of dyslexia and some students have developed coping strategies early on. My experience is to focus on their strengths. Dyslexics are often good oral communicators; it is a way of coping with their disability. So, if possible, give them opportunities to speak and make visually-oriented presentations.

Elena,
typically the vast majority of students are not distracted by the boxes, they see them & move on.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

The question I have is, will boxing all questions be a distraction for the other students? What is good for the goose, is not necessarily good for the gander. Are you thinking we should design a separate exam for the student with dyslexia?

The box suggestion is something I did not know. This would be an easy solution that would help the student so much. This is very helpful. Great module.

Kristin,
it really is a great technique to help set the information apart & this can be very helpful for those students who struggle in this area.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I also never heard about the box thing either. It definitely keeps your mind more focused on the question that is asked instead of looking at other questions at the same time.

Susan,
yes, the boxing of questions & other simple techniques like this can be very helpful & are easy to do.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

I will definitely place boxes around my tests questions. My brother has dyslexia and no one ever suggested boxes around tests questions. As the module said, helping someone with learning disabilities is simple and not very time consuming so lets get busy helping students.

I never knew about the box tell this course. What a great idea. I have heard about dylexia but not about how much the box can help.

Brian,

glad the information was useful & yes, there are many ways we can help in this way.

Ryan Meers, Ph.D.

This module was helpful because although I have heard of dylexia, I never really knew how it worked. I think now, we should redesign our tests and put a box around each question.
